Developer Onboarding Checklist Template for Engineering Teams
Developer onboarding fails in two predictable places: environment setup and process clarity. A developer who spends their first three days fighting dependency conflicts and missing credentials contributes nothing during a period when their initial impressions are forming. A developer who does not understand the team's PR process, code review expectations, or deployment workflow makes expensive mistakes on their first contributions.
This template is structured around those two failure modes: get the environment working on day one, clarify process before the first PR.
Repository and Environment Setup in the First Four Hours
The checklist opens with repository access, branch structure overview, and local environment setup. For most teams, this means: repository clone, dependency installation, environment variable configuration, and a successful local build. This template includes a task for each step with links to setup documentation.
The environment section also covers the team's CI/CD pipeline: how tests run, what failing tests block, and how deployments work. A developer who does not understand the pipeline merges code without realizing it will break the build or block a deployment.
Code Review Culture and PR Expectations
The second section covers process: how the team opens PRs, what a good PR description looks like, how code review comments work, and what the expected turnaround time is. This is culture that most teams transmit informally through observation over weeks. The checklist makes it explicit on day two.
This section includes a walkthrough task for an existing PR (closed, with comments) so the new developer can see the team's review style before submitting their own.
The First PR Assignment
The template includes a first PR assignment in week one: small scope, defined reviewer, and a walkthrough task where the new developer shares their screen or records a Loom explaining the change. This is not about the code. It is about establishing the feedback loop and calibrating the developer's understanding of team standards.
Most developer onboarding checklists delay the first real contribution to week three or four. This template treats week one as the fastest path to useful feedback, which benefits both the new developer and the team.
Why Agencies Use This Template
Development agencies onboarding contractors or new hires on active client projects cannot afford a two-week ramp. This template is structured for agencies where the developer needs to be contributing to client work by the end of week one. Melororium runs each checklist item with an assigned owner and due date. The manager sees completion progress in real time without asking for status updates. Available on all plans starting at $29/month flat.
