What is a content editorial calendar?
A content editorial calendar is a planning and production management system for all content types — blogs, social posts, newsletters, videos, podcasts — that maps each piece of content to a channel, a publish date, a production status, and an owner. It replaces the Google Sheets content plan that shows upcoming publish dates but not whether the content is actually ready to publish.

The irony of content calendar failures is that the calendar is rarely the problem. The publish date is known. The content type is planned. The failure happens in production: the article isn't ready by Thursday because the writer thought the deadline was Friday, the editor wasn't aware the article was in their queue, or the graphic for the blog header wasn't created because the designer wasn't briefed.
A publishing calendar shows dates. An editorial calendar tracks the production status that determines whether the content will be ready on the date. These are different tools, and most teams have the first without the second.

Every content item has one owner and one publish date. These are not optional fields — they're required before the item moves out of Planned status. The owner is accountable for the piece reaching Published status by the date. The publish date appears on the Calendar so the editorial schedule is visible at a glance.
Performance field for post-publication data
After publishing, add a performance field to each content card: pageviews, email opens, video views, social engagement. This keeps historical performance data next to the content itself — useful for content audits, for identifying which formats and topics perform best, and for briefing future content based on what has worked.

Notion's content database is popular for editorial calendars — it has calendar view, custom fields, and a clean interface.
