Team utilization measures what percentage of each team member's available time was actually logged. The standard benchmark is an 8-hour workday. If a designer logged 6 hours on Wednesday, their utilization for that day is 75%. If they logged 10 hours, it is 125%.
Utilization is a leading indicator of two separate problems. High utilization (consistently 90%+) predicts burnout, deadline slippage, and quality issues before they happen. Low utilization (consistently below 60%) indicates either inefficiency, untracked work, or unused capacity that could absorb additional projects.

What Counts Toward Utilization
Utilization in a time-tracked environment counts only logged hours — time actually recorded against tasks. This means:
A team member who works but does not log time appears as 0% utilized, even if they worked a full day. This is the most common data quality problem in utilization tracking — and it is why consistent time logging habits matter as much as the tracking system itself.
Breaks (logged through a break tracking system) do not count toward utilization. Overtime — time logged past the standard workday window — appears as a separate visual signal rather than as positive utilization.

Attendance answers a simpler question than utilization: was this person working at all today? The attendance widget in Melororium's Live Timers page shows two groups: team members who have not logged any time today, and team members with approved leave requests. People on approved leave are not flagged as absent.
The attendance check takes 10 seconds. If someone is absent with no leave request, a manager knows to follow up — without waiting for EOD when the hours report would have shown zeroes anyway.
